Nagpur: Singer and banker Amruta Fadnavis, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's wife, called Prime Minister Narendra Modi "father of the nation". The BJP ministers gave the title, which Mahatma Gandhi was honoured with, to call PM Modi but later rephrased her statement to include Gandhiji also, NDTV reported.

In an interview at an on-stage event in Nagpur, organized by the writer's association, she made the statement, but then she was asked what Gandhiji would be called if she refers Modi as "rashra-pita".

She replied that Mahatma Gandhi was the Father of the Nation and Modi was the Father of new India. There are Fathers of the Nation: one for the current era and one in "that" era, Amruta said in Marathi.

She had made statements earlier, too, hinting that Modi is the Father of the nation. In a September 2019 tweet, wishing the PM on his birthday, Amruta tweeted, "Wishing the Father of our Country @narendramodi ji a very Happy Birthday- who inspires us to work relentlessly towards the betterment of the society!"

Earlier this year, she had taken a dig at the Maharastra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray while the Shiv Sena mutiny was going on. She tweeted that once there was a wicked king, which was an apparent reference to Thackeray.

After Thackeray's fall, Amruta's husband became deputy when the mutiny leader in the Sena, Eknath Shinde, became CM.
