Megalodon tooth necklace discovered in Titanic wreckage, AI to search for an owner

Guernsey: A necklace made of the tooth of the megalodon shark, an extinct species, was found in the wreckage of Titanic. The necklace was lost when the ship sank 111 years ago.
Megalodon is a prehistoric shark species that lived around 20 million years ago and it is the biggest shark species known to man.
The turquoise and gold necklace was spotted in one of the images taken by Magellan, the company that created the full 3D scan of the ship. The company is hoping to use AI technology to identify the owner of the necklace and their surviving family members. They think that AI and facial recognition can be used to monitor the footage of passengers boarding the ship and hope to catch a glimpse of the necklace being worn by someone.
The necklace is likely to stay underwater because a pre-existing agreement between the UK and the US prevents members of the public from removing artefacts from the wreckage.
The discovery was made by Magellan, a Guernsey-based company, that created the first full-size digital scan of the infamous ship. The largest underwater scan in history produced over 700,000 images of the ship at every angle and led to the creation of a very accurate 3D reconstruction.
Magellan CEO Richard Parkinson said that the discovery of the lost jewellery is "astonishing, beautiful, and breathtaking" considering the size of the wreck site. "What is not widely understood is that the Titanic is in two parts and there's a three-square-mile debris field between the bow and the stern. The team mapped the field in such detail that we could pick out those details," reported The Independent.
