London: A woman suffered kidney damage after having her hair straightened at a Salon, according to a medical journal.

The identity of the woman is not revealed in the article published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Doctors have described in detail what has happened to her after the hair straightening procedure.

One of the products used for hair straightening may have caused organ injuries, said a doctor who treated her.

The 26-year-old woman, who had no previous health issues, went to get the hair treatment in June 2020, April 2021 and July 2022.

After each session, she suffered vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and back pain.

She also reported burning sensation on her scalp alongside developing ulcers on her head, according to the study.

Subsequently, her creatinine levels in blood rose and doctors noticed kidney malfunction.

She had blood in her urine but a CT scan showed no other sign of infection and her kidneys too were not blocked.

Hair straightening procedure involved a cream containing the chemical glyoxylic acid, the woman said.

The doctors attribute the chemical to the cause of burn and ulcer on her scalp.

After an experiment on the mice, the study concluded that the acid reached her kidneys through her skin , causing the damage.
