The death toll from the catastrophic landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad district continues to rise, with 73 bodies recovered and 30 identified so far. The tragedy struck early this morning amid relentless heavy rainfall, causing massive landslides that have severely impacted the region. The landslides particularly devastated the hilly areas near Meppadi, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos.

The disaster has resulted in approximately 250 people being stranded in the affected areas, with rescue operations facing significant challenges due to the ongoing bad weather. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army, and local officials are working tirelessly, but their efforts are being severely hampered by the adverse weather conditions.

The impact of the landslide is widespread. In Puthumala, 20 bodies have been recovered, while over 100 individuals are still missing across Wayanad district. The Churulmalai area has seen 101 people rescued, though the situation remains critical. The rising water levels in the Chalriyar River, caused by continuous heavy rains, have further complicated rescue operations. In Chalriyar, 12 bodies have been discovered in the medical college and five in the hospital.

The floods have caused extensive damage, with several landslides impacting homes and infrastructure. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) services have been temporarily suspended due to the floods. Police and rescue teams are working to maintain order and coordinate relief efforts.

On the ground, the Chief Minister and other ministers are actively involved in managing the situation. For those needing assistance, control room numbers have been made available:

Deputy Collector: 8547616025

Taluk Office, Vythiri: 8547616601

Kalpetta Jn. BDO Office: 9961289892

Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector: 9383405093

Fire and Rescue Services: 9497920271

Deputy Taluk Office, Vythiri: 9447350688

The Prime Minister has announced a relief package of ₹2 lakhs for the families of the deceased. The government is committed to providing all possible assistance as rescue operations continue despite the difficult conditions.

The Chief Minister has assured that all necessary measures are being taken for relief and rehabilitation. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan is also visiting Wayanad to assess the situation. The combined efforts of state and national agencies are crucial in navigating this crisis and supporting the affected families.
