Kerala HC refuses to defer SIR; asks state govt to approach SC

The Kerala High Court declined to consider the state government’s request to postpone the Election Commission of India’s ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll until after the local body elections.
The court noted that similar cases concerning the SIR process in other states are already awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court. Justice V. G. Arun observed that judicial discipline required the High Court to step back from examining the matter at this stage.
The judge closed the petition but indicated that the state could approach the Supreme Court or return to the High Court later, depending on how the apex court rules in the pending cases, TNIE reported.
The state government maintained that it was not questioning the validity of the SIR itself, but only asking for the process to be postponed until the local elections conclude.
However, the High Court remarked that it would not be proper for it to take up the petition by interpreting the Supreme Court’s interim orders.
