New Delhi: India on Monday continued to see a drop in daily surge in coronavirus cases with 2,503 new infections, the lowest single-day rise in 680 days. The fresh surge takes the overall caseload to 4,29,93,494.

The total reported fatalities due to Covid-19 now stands at 5,15,877 after 27 patients died in the last twenty-four hours.

The number of active cases stands at 36,168 with a 98.72% recovery rate. The number of recoveries over the last 24 hours is 4,377 totaling 4,24,41,449 recoveries.

The number of vaccinations administered under the nationwide vaccination drive stands at 1,80,19,45,779.

Maharashtra takes up the top spot for the highest number of confirmed cases recorded in the country, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

A study conducted by IIT Kanpur says there is a possibility that the fourth wave in India will occur in June. According to the researchers, the severity itself will rely on the nature of the variant and the Covid vaccination status across the country.

The World Health Organisation has made conflicting statements on the effectiveness of booster shots. In a most recent statement, WHO has said that its expert group concluded that immunization with authorized Covid-19 vaccines provides high levels of protection against severe disease and death.
