Malappuram: In a historic move, Ananyakumari Alex, a native of Malappuram has become the first transgender candidate from Kerala to contest in the State Assembly elections in April 2021.

Being the first transgender candidate ever to contest in Kerala's assembly elections, Ananyakumari expressed her gratitude while addressing the 'Sabhangam 2021' of Malappuram Press Club. Ananya, representing the Democratic Social Justice Party at Vengara, said that addressing the issues faced by the transgender community is also an aim of her candidature.

When she was asked why she chose Vengara while being a native of the Kollam district, she replied that Vengara witnesses a mighty contest and people who are not aware of the 'trans' community are still there. She wants to introduce her community to them and the campaign will be based on that.

Ananyakumari said that she is receiving strong support and love from the voters there.

She also added that the trans-community is also a part of society and they should be helped to find a job of their own.
