Thrissur: Foreboding drought, the state received average rainfall only on five days in June; they are June 10, 11,12,20,22.
Thanks to the ‘Vayu’ cyclone between 10-11 leading to the average rainfall, which should naturally be included into monsoon shower.
Based on this calculation, the average rainfall was on June 20 and 22. Lack of double as much per-day rain received in June led to fall in average rain.
Average rainfall in June usually is 680mm; however, the state received only 256mm rain so far, signaling appalling change in monsoon pattern.
July being the second month in the first leg of monsoon, the rainfall in the first few days still goes scanty. Both South and coastal Kerala may well get average rain, according to authorities.
More rains are expected between 10 and 12; if situation goes wrong against predictions, Kerala will face its worst crisis in decades.
However, there has been heavy rain in August and September over the last many years.
Less rains stem from weak monsoon depression.
