Chennai: Former AIADMK MLA KPP Baskar of Tamil Nadu is being raided by the directorate of Vigilance and anti-corruption authorities. The raids were going on in 26 locations, including his properties in Namakkal and those close to him and suspected to be his associates, NDTV reported.

The directorate of Vigilance said in a statement that the two-time ex-MLA had gathered ₹ 4.72 crore assets, 315 per cent more than his legal income. Searches happening in Namakkal, Madurai, and Tiruppur are part of an investigation underway.

According to a First Information Report, the lawful income was only Rs 1.4 crore during the check period between 2016 and 2021 during Baskar's second term as MLA.

The FIR stated that after expenses of Rs 61 lakh, the balance should be Rs 88 lakh but the MLA and his associates accumulated properties worth ₹ 4.72 crores.

Meanwhile, AIADMK has not issued a formal response on the development yet. A source from the party termed the raids as illegal and said they would face the matter legally.

Baskar is the 8th AIAMK to be raided by the agency since the DMK government took office last year, and seven among them were former ministers.
