New Delhi: Saying that opposition allegations were not true, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday stated that a uniform civil code is not used as a tool to polarise voters ahead of elections. He said the code would be implemented in the state soon, PTI reported.

Addressing the HT Leadership Summit, he said that a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai is working on a draft, and the same will be ready soon.

"We will implement it soon," he said.

He said the implementation of a common code was not limited to state polls. "After the polls, we worked on what we had said," he said.

He said that the higher judiciary is of the view that states should implement it, citing Article 44 of the Constitution and some Supreme Court observations.

Later he replied to a question about the alleged rape and murder of a woman who was employed at a resort in the state. He said the public's agitation is natural, but police have apprehended all the accused. "Dev Bhoomi" has no place for such people who indulge in such crimes, he added.

He promised that his government would make sure that such incidents would not happen again. However, he rejected suggestions that the use of a bulldozer to bring down the structure resulted in the loss of valuable evidence.

He assured that the evidence was preserved and videographed before the structure was razed.
