Two killed and several trapped following tragic landslide in Mumbai suburb

Mumbai: At least two people have died and several others are feared trapped after a landslide crushed residential properties in the Ghatkopar area of eastern Mumbai during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency teams were dispatched to Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar at around 3:48 am after a section of an adjacent hillock collapsed following heavy rainfall, sending soil and heavy debris crashing onto several homes below. Local authorities confirmed that two victims died at the scene, whilst emergency workers continue searching through the rubble to locate between three and four residents still unaccounted for.

A major multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway involving the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the local police force, and the National Disaster Response Force. Senior civic officials, including Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and municipal representatives, visited the disaster site to oversee the evacuation process and review emergency measures.

Paramedics confirmed that two teenagers aged 14 and 18 were pulled out from the debris, and were taken to hospital for treatment of head and back injuries, where both remain in a stable condition. Police officials stated that formal investigations will take place as rescue crews work continuously to clear the remaining debris.
