TV channel head close to Mamata Banerjee faces ED raid
text_fieldsKolkata: Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax are conducting a simultaneous raid and search operations at the residence and offices of Kaustav Roy, a Kolkata-based businessman and the CEO of a popular Bengali news channel.
Roy is known for being a close associate of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The reason for this development is not yet clear. The businessman is involved in multiple sectors like computers, software, and media.
He was in the middle of a controversy this May after the state government made him the chairman of a committee for planning and monitoring welfare and development schemes. Many alleged that Roy has a debatable background for the role. After then-Governor Jagdeep Dhankar questioned the justification of Roy's appointment in the crucial chair, his name was dropped.
He was arrested by CBI in May 2018 as the director of RP Infosystems in connection with a Rs 515 crore bank fraud scam involving a consortium of banks, including Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank. His channel also received a caution of cancellation of licence from the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting citing the Ministry of Home Affairs' denial of "security clearance" in September 2021.
