Trump repeats claim of mediating India-Pakistan truce, ‘threatened 200% tariffs’

US President Donald Trump has once again credited his tariff threats for bringing peace between India and Pakistan during the military conflict earlier this year.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Egypt for a Middle East peace summit, Trump claimed that his trade strategy was the key factor in resolving the standoff.

Trump said that he had settled a few wars simply by using tariffs, citing the example of India and Pakistan. He explained that he had warned both countries that if they wanted to fight a war despite having nuclear weapons, he would impose tariffs of 100, 150, or even 200 per cent on them. He added that he had managed to settle the matter within 24 hours and claimed that without tariffs, the conflict could never have been resolved.

The President’s comments come as he travels to the Middle East ahead of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. Trump claimed that the Gaza truce would mark the eighth conflict he has “solved” and suggested he would next focus on easing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Trump told reporters that this would be the eighth war he had solved and that he had heard a war was now going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said it would have to wait until he got back because he was handling another one, adding that he was good at solving wars.

India, however, has consistently dismissed claims of any US role in the May 2025 ceasefire with Pakistan that followed Operation Sindoor. New Delhi maintains that the truce was achieved through direct communication between the military leadership of both countries, without outside mediation.

Since the announcement of the ceasefire, Trump has repeatedly taken credit for halting the conflict, often citing his trade policies as a decisive factor.

The US President also used the opportunity to highlight his record of “solving wars” and linked it to his ongoing push for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

Trump said that several wars had been going on for decades — some for 31, 32, or even 37 years — with millions of people killed in each country. He claimed to have resolved all of them, for the most part, within a day, calling it “pretty good” and adding that it was an honour to do so because he had “saved millions of lives.”

When asked about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump said, “In all fairness to the Nobel committee, it was for 2024. This was picked for 2024. But there are those who say you could make an exception because a lot of things happened during 2025 that are done and complete and great. But I did not do this for the Nobel. I did this to save lives.”
