Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister controversially said that ‘love jihad’ involved in the murder of three persons in Golaghat on Monday evening.

Rightwing outfits for long have been campaigning that Muslim youths lure Hindu women to marry and convert, terming the process as 'Love jihad'.

Sarma announced that the case against the accused would be fast-tracked filing a chargesheet within 15 days, NDTV reported.

After visiting the victims’ family on Wednesday, Sharma reportedly said, ‘It is a total case of love jihad. The deceased family was Hindu and the accused belongs to the Muslim community. He first introduced himself with a Hindu name on Facebook... the woman learnt to use drugs when the couple had escaped to Kolkata.’

Bodies of three victims, identified as Sanjeev Ghosh, Junu Ghosh, and Sanghamitra Ghosh, had multiple injuries, suggesting attack involving harp weapons.

The accused Najibur Rahman Bora, the 25-year-old mechanical engineer, according to the chief minister, is a drug addict who trafficked contraband substances.

Sarma claimed that Sanghamitra Ghosh was given injectable drugs and was impregnated under its influence, adding that ‘She was tortured when she went to live at the house of the accused and returned to her maternal home later.’

Expressing concern over cases ‘where religious identities are hidden’ to lure women to marriage, he said in such a situation woman ‘ultimately converts her religion’.

Sarma promised ‘proper investigation’ into the case, adding that no one involved in the case would be spared.

Bora surrendered to the police in the Golaghat district following the murder of his wife and her parents.

The accused is an engineering graduate (mechanical) from Central Institute of Technology, Kolkata, police said.

Bora and Sanghamitra Ghosh met on Facebook during the covid lockdown in 2020 and they quickly fell in love, and later married.
