New Delhi: A furious mob that protested Nupur Sharma's comments on Prophet Muhammad on Sunday threw stones at the Lalgola-Ranaghattrain local train at Bethuadahari railway station in West Bengal's Nadia district.

A mob of 1000 people pelted stones at the train leading to halt services on the route, according reported news agency ANI quoting Eklavya Chakraborty, Chief Public Relations Officer, Eastern Railway.

The railway authorities beefed up security to area to bring the situation under control.

The violent protests were reported from several parts of Howrah district on Friday sequel to the remarks on Prophet Muhammad by ousted BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.

Just as protests continue in Bengal, often leading to violence, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party leaders appealed for calm as well as warning of strict action.

Trinamool's Mahua Moitra in a tweet appealed for peace and said that protesters should stick within the purview of law while demonstrating.

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari challenged to fight police in court after being told not to visit trouble-hit places in Howrah where public gathering was banned, according to NDTV.

Protests that erupted in the nation following BJP leaders comment on Prophet Muhammad spread to Muslim world with countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Iran demanding an apology over the remarks.
