New Delhi: A high-powered selection committee, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Supreme Court Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has named IPS officer Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as the new CBI chief.

Jaiswal's name emerged after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had knocked out the other two frontrunners when Justice NV Ramana raised contentions, drawing appointment rules.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has, based on the panel recommended by the Committee, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS, (Maharashtra 1985) as Director, CBI for a period of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the office or until further orders whichever is earlier," the Department of Personnel and Training said.

Jaiswal is currently the Director-General of the Central Industrial Security Force. He also served as Directorate General of Police in Maharashtra and in India's external intelligence agency R&AW.

In the firmness of Justice Ramana and backed by the Opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, two senior officers, YC Modi and Rakesh Asthana, were removed from the list.

YC Modi, currently chief of the National Investigation Agency, retires at the end of this month while Asthana, who is heading the BSF, retires in July. Both had stints in the CBI in the past and were considered frontrunners for the post of the Director.
