Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her police could have opened fire at the reckless BJP protesters, but the government kept strict restraint, PTI reported.

Banerjee accused BJP of bringing goons armed with explosives from outside the state to fuel issues during the party's 'Nabanna Abhijan' on Tuesday.

In an administrative meeting at Nimtouri in Purba Medinipur district, Mamata Banerjee said, "Many police personnel were brutally attacked by the participants of that rally... Police could have opened fire, but our administration showed maximum restraint."

The protest march created inconvenience to commuters and traders, and it is Durga pooja just weeks ahead, she added.

The CM, "We have nothing against democratic and peaceful protests. But, the BJP and its supporters resorted to violence, vandalism and arson. They torched properties and instilled fear among people."

She added, "We won't allow this. Arrests are being made, and law will take its own course."
