The South Central Railway has allocated more than Rs 13,000 crore for infrastructure works in 2026-27, an 18.3 per cent increase from Rs 11,012 crore in the previous financial year.

According to chief public relations officer A Sridhar, the zone has set aside Rs 13,026 crore to continue expanding railway infrastructure.

Of the total allocation, Rs 1,315 crore has been earmarked for new lines and Rs 5,083 crore for track doubling. Another Rs 1,908 crore has been allocated for track renewals, Rs 403 crore for traffic facilities, and Rs 683 crore for road safety works.

In 2025-26, the zone added 194 km of track, including new lines, doubling, and tripling. New railway lines covering nearly 36 km were laid between Mallavaram and Kanigiri.

Track doubling covered 79 km, including 13.4 km between Panyam and Nandyal, 17 km between Basar and Navipet, and a 21.4 km bypass line at Kazipet. The zone also completed nearly 2 km of ‘Y’ connectivity at Tandur and a 2.1 km bypass line at Peddapalli.

Track tripling of 79.8 km was completed between Balharshah and Manikgarh, along with 5.8 km between Motumari and Madhira, 30.4 km between Mahabubabad and Nekkonda, and 19.5 km between Khammam and Dornakal. The zone also electrified 325 track km during FY26.

Sridhar said third-line work on the Grand Trunk route from Gudur through Vijayawada and Kazipet to Balharshah is nearly complete across around 700 km, except for a few small stretches.

He said completion of the line would ease passenger and freight movement between South and North India. Bypass lines at Kazipet, Wadi, and Peddapalli are also expected to reduce congestion at major junctions, while the Tandur ‘Y’ connectivity will improve freight and coaching traffic on the Mumbai route.

The new line between Mallavaram and Kanigiri is expected to improve rail access to remote villages.
