Sold halal meat: Bengal man faces harassment in Punjab
text_fieldsMohali: A West Bengal native running a chicken shop in Punjab’s Mohali district faced harassment from two young Nihang Sikhs who questioned him over selling halal meat and demanded proof of his identity, Siasat reported.
The owner of Khan Chicken Shop was confronted by the duo over whether the non-vegetarian food served at his establishment was halal. Despite his explanation, one of them insisted that he display a board outside the shop declaring that the food was prepared using halal meat, claiming customers should know whether the meat they consumed was halal.
The harassment took a communal turn when the men learned that the shop owner was from West Bengal. They questioned whether he was a Bangladeshi, prompting him to clarify that he was from Bengal, not Bangladesh.
Refusing to accept his response, the duo demanded that he produce his Aadhaar card, further escalating the confrontation.
They also insisted that he put up a signboard explicitly stating that the soup sold at the shop was made using halal meat.
The incident has raised concerns over the harassment of a small business owner over his food choices and regional identity.
