NEW DELHI: CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury's eldest son Ashish Yechury, who was fighting COVID infection, has died today at the age of 35.

He was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram and had been in ICU since April 12 after the infection spread to his lungs. He was a senior copy editor, working with a leading newspaper in New Delhi.

Yechuri himself took to Twitter to share the unfortunate news among everyone.

"It is with great sadness that I have to inform that I lost my elder son, Ashish Yechury, to COVID-19 this morning. I want to thank all those who gave us hope and who treated him — doctors, nurses, frontline health workers, sanitation workers and innumerable others who stood by us," the tweet read.

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also issued a statement conveying its condolences to the Yechuri family.

Yechury is presently under quarantine at his home.
