New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after resignation, will return to her country once the caretaker government announces polls, Reuters reported citing her son.

Failing to quell the weeks of engulfing protests, Hasina left the country and it was reported earlier that she was in the midst of seeking asylum in UK.

Since her absence, a caretaker government led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has sworn in on Thursday.

Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, based in the US, told The Times of India: ‘For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.’

Hasina's Awami League party does not feature in the interim government.

Hasina’s exit came after nationwide violence during the students uprising killed about 300 people and injured thousands.

She is currently staying in the New Delhi area and it is reported that she is seeking asylum in Britain.

However, the British Home Office has not commented on the development.

Meanwhile India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar reportedly discussed with his British counterpart the situation in Bangladesh.
