Shahi Jama Masjid survey report almost done: Sambhal court commissioner

Sambhal: The survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid is nearly complete, with the final report expected to be submitted to the court by early January 2025, according to Advocate Ramesh Singh Raghav, the court-appointed commissioner overseeing the process.

Raghav confirmed that the report is in its final stages and would be filed either on January 2 or 3, 2025, addressing some minor technical issues before submission. He also noted that, as the last working day of the court approaches, the report would be submitted before the Supreme Court's stay order expires on January 6, which has barred the trial court from taking any action on the matter.

The survey was initiated after the Hindu side claimed that the Shahi Jama Masjid, built by Mughal Emperor Babur in 1526, was constructed upon the remains of a demolished temple. On November 19, an ex-parte order was issued for the mosque’s survey, and a second round of survey began on November 24. During this round, violent clashes broke out between protesting locals and security personnel, resulting in four deaths and several injuries.

Following the unrest, the Supreme Court intervened on November 29, halting the proceedings and directing the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure peace and harmony in the town.
