SC seeks Unnao rape survivor’s response on Centre’s plea to remove her security

New Delhi: In the Unnao rape case, the Supreme Court requested a response from the complainant on Tuesday about the Union government's request to revoke the security cover that the Central Reserve Police Force had given her and her family, PTI reported.
In 2017, a woman was sexually assaulted in the Unnao area of Uttar Pradesh. The woman and her family were under protection from the central security force following a 2019 court ruling.
The survivor, her mother, and her lawyer were among the people whose lives were in danger, as the court noted at the time. Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the expelled MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was found guilty in December 2019 of raping the woman in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, in 2017, Scroll.in reported.
At the time, she was a minor. Along with being sentenced to life in jail, he was also mandated to compensate the complainant with Rs 25 lakh. At the Delhi High Court, his appeal is currently pending.
For the killing of the woman’s father in judicial custody, Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother Jaideep Singh Sengar, among others, were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in March 2020.
The woman's father was killed in judicial custody, and Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother Jaideep Singh Sengar, and other individuals were given ten-year prison sentences for it in March 2020.
Since there was little indication that the woman was in danger, the bench of Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma stated on Tuesday that it would prefer to close the case involving the security cover for the woman.
According to PTI, the Centre's lawyer informed the court that an analysis had determined the woman and her family were no longer in need of a security detail.
The woman and her family currently live in Delhi, thus the Union government had argued that Uttar Pradesh or the Delhi Police should be responsible for providing the security cover.
The Central Reserve Police Force reports to the Union Home Ministry. All rape case-related matters were moved from a Lucknow court to a Delhi court in 2019 by the Supreme Court.
