SC extends Ashoka University professor’s bail

In a reprieve for Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who is facing legal issues over a social media post related to Operation Sindoor, the Supreme Court has extended his interim bail shortly after his release from Sonepat jail.
However, this relief comes with a condition. Although the Court has not restricted his general right to free speech, it has directed him to refrain from making any online posts, publishing articles, or delivering speeches related to the two social media posts currently under investigation.
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta, has not altered his specific bail condition, Hindustan Times reported.
The Supreme Court has requested a report detailing the findings of the three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) and has also directed the Haryana police to inform it of their response to a notice issued by the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) regarding the FIRs filed against Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad.
This development follows the NHRC’s statement on May 21, where the commission indicated that it had taken suo motu cognisance of a media report concerning Mahmudabad's arrest.
According to the NHRC, the preliminary information in the report suggests that there may have been a violation of the professor’s human rights and personal liberty.
