Sasikala applies for early release from prison
text_fieldsV.K Sasikala, the former aide of late Tamilnadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha, has applied for a remission on her jail sentence in the disproportionate assets case for which she has been serving a term of four years.
Since three days of remission are available for every month completed in jail, it is expected that she may be granted a total remission of 135 days for 43 months spent in imprisonment, moving up her release date from January. The application is being considered by authorities at the moment, said sources close to PTI.
Sasikala's relatives had deposited a fine of Rs 10 crore in a Bangalore civil court last month, a move which allowed her the possibility of release by January 27 2021. She had been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara Jail since surrendering before a Karnataka court in 2017 after the Supreme Court re-instated the case against her and other accomplices.
Sasikala's sister-in-law Ilavarasai and nephew Sudhakaran are also serving their own sentences in the graft case.
The AIADMK had distanced themselves from Sasikala and Surendhran after the disproportionate assets scandal and expelled both individuals from the party.
