Same-sex couple thrashed by family after announcing wedding plans in UP
text_fieldsTwo women, who are also cousins, faced physical assault from their respective families when they revealed their intention to marry each other in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The women, aged 31 and 26, had been in a romantic relationship for the past five years, according to local police reports.
Upon informing their families about their desire to wed, they were met with violence and opposition. The situation escalated as they created a scene and even threatened to take their own lives if their marriage was not allowed to take place, reported the police.
In desperation, they dialed 112, the emergency police assistance number. Subsequently, Sunil Sisodia, the in-charge of the Tajpur police outpost, rushed to the scene to assess the situation.
After conversing with both women and their families, despite hours of persuasion by the police and relatives, the cousins remained steadfast in their determination to marry each other.
In an effort to mediate and offer guidance, the women were taken to the police station, where female officers attempted to counsel them.
Amar Pal Singh, the Kotwali inspector, stated, "Their family is not ready for their marriage and when a compromise could not be reached, we sent both of them to the One Stop Centre, where an attempt will be made to convince them and if that does not work either, they will be produced in court."
One of the women is pursuing a computer course, while the other is working towards obtaining a basic teaching certificate (BTC).
