New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed criticizing Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness invited a huge backlash from her. After her social media post on the same and the outrage that followed, Congress's high command asked Shama to remove her post, which she did instantly, NDTV reported.

Shama dropped the post during the Sunday match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 between India and New Zealand, where the former won.

Shama wrote, "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.”

But her post turned out to be a mistake in a cricket frenzy nation, where Rohit’s fans, as well as fans of cricket at large, skinned her online. BJP also did not miss the chance to open fire.

When fans pointed out statistics of the Indian team's performance under Rohit’s captaincy, BJP said that Shama’s statement showed the Congress party’s “Emergency mindset”.

A day later, she wrote more posts defending herself, saying that her remark was generic in nature and "failed to understand how, in a democracy, we don't have the right to speak".

But the Congress party chose to distance itself from Shama and asked her to delete her posts. Later, she deleted all her posts, starting with the controversial one.
