Renewal fees for vehicles over 20 years old doubled, car owners to pay Rs 10,000
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has doubled the renewal charges for vehicles older than 20 years in a bid to discourage their continued use.
According to a recent notification, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) that have crossed the 20-year mark will now be Rs 10,000, up from the previous Rs 5,000.
Motorcycles of the same age will attract a fee of Rs 2,000, compared to the earlier Rs 1,000.
For three-wheelers and quadricycles, the renewal charges have been raised from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000. Imported vehicles will see a sharper hike, with two- and three-wheelers set at Rs 20,000 and four-wheelers or larger vehicles at Rs 80,000.
The ministry had floated the draft amendment in February, which was finalised on August 21. This comes after an earlier round of fee hikes in October 2021 for registration and renewal of motorcycles, three-wheelers, and cars.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Supreme Court directed that no coercive action be taken against owners of diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR. The order followed the Delhi government’s request to consider vehicle usage rather than just the manufacturing year under the end-of-life vehicle policy.
