Rahul Gandhi modifies Twitter bio after his disqualification from Parliament
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Congress, updated his Twitter bio after his disqualification from the parliament. In the bio part that appears immediately below the account name, he has changed "Member of Parliament" to "Dis'Qualified MP."
"This is the official account of Rahul Gandhi | Member of the Indian National Congress | Dis'Qualified MP," his bio now reads.
In the meantime, nationwide demonstrations against his removal are being organised by his Congress party today, NDTV reported.
After he was found guilty of defamation for comments that suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a criminal, his position in the Lok Sabha was revoked.
"How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname," he had allegedly remarked at a pre-election rally in Karnataka's Kolar, a remark that the ruling BJP projected as a smear campaign against those sharing the Modi surname and the backward community.
His comments sparked several defamation lawsuits in different states. On Thursday, a judge in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Modi is from, found him guilty and gave him a two-year prison term. However, the judge gave him a 30-day bail period so he could challenge the ruling.
The head of Congress has not yet appealed the ruling to a higher court.
Following his removal, Rahul Gandhi's Wayanad seat in Kerala is now empty. He won the poll in Wayanad, his second seat, in 2019, but lost in Amethi, his seat since 2004.
