Rahul Gandhi to consider becoming Congress president again
text_fieldsFollowing requests by senior leaders, Rahul Gandhi said he will consider becoming the Congress party President, reports ANI. The report further added that the Congress MP said he needs clarity at the ideology level from party leaders. Several also suggested that Rahul must be the working President of the party until the new one is elected. The elections to the post will be held next year between August 21 and September 20. The news comes after the five-hour-long Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday.
Responding to allegations of the G-23 leaders of a lack of leadership in the party, Sonia Gandhi said, "I have always appreciated frankness. There is no need to speak to me through the media. So let us all have a free and honest discussion. But what should get communicated outside the four walls of this room is the collective decision of the CWC." She further added that she is a full-time and hands-on Congress president. The G-23 leaders had questioned the party leadership afresh after the recent Punjab crisis.
"In the last two years, a large number of our colleagues, particularly the younger ones, have taken on leadership roles in taking party policies and programmes to the people - whether it is the agitation of farmers, provision of relief during the pandemic, highlighting issues of concern to youth and women, atrocities on Dalits, Adivasis and minorities, price rise, and the destruction of the public sector," Sonia Gandhi added.
Rahul Gandhi took responsibility for Congress' defeat in the 2019 general elections and stepped down to make way for Sonia Gandhi as interim President. However, now everyone is of the opinion that Rahul Gandhi should become the party president, said Ambika Soni.
