Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi over foreign policy and claims diplomacy is not just hugging world leaders

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's approach to international relations, arguing that foreign policy cannot be reduced to personal displays of affection such as hugging foreign dignitaries.
Speaking at a party plenary session in New Delhi on Thursday, 13 August, Gandhi asserted that India's diplomatic engagement must be driven strictly by national interest rather than personal friendships with global leaders. Pointing to the geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Gandhi claimed that India missed a critical opportunity to act as a mediator, allowing Pakistan to step into the role instead.
The former Congress president also raised concerns over border security and China, alleging that Beijing had restricted Indian army patrols in Arunachal Pradesh. He criticised the government's stance following the Galwan Valley clashes, arguing that the Prime Minister's statements contradicted the military's assessments and ultimately compromised India's negotiating position. Furthermore, Gandhi accused the administration of exerting pressure on media organisations to suppress reporting on border issues.
During his address, Gandhi questioned why Prime Minister Modi avoids holding press conferences, contrasting the government's rhetoric on ancient traditions with what he called a failure to understand the realities of modern India. He also claimed to receive insights directly from officials within the Prime Minister's Office, adding that members of the ruling party recognise the growing strength of the opposition.
