text_fieldsNew Delhi: A woman in Delhi losing Rs 50 lakh following three missed calls from an unknown number suggests that everybody should be guarded against the scary practice of ‘SIM swapping’, according to reports.
The advocate who lost the money said she called back to the missed call from a different number, The Indian Express reported.
The person who answered the call said it was a courier call and then the woman shared her house address.
Following which the 35-year-old woman received two ‘transaction notifications’ from her bank, suggesting loss of money, according to NDTV.
The incident’s most worrying detail is woman did not share any OTP with the scammer.
It is now revealed that scammers can trick the network provider and link target person’s number to the SIM card in their possession, thus accessing the person’s SIM card, according to the report.
Afterwards anyone calling or texting to the person’s number gets connected to the scammers’ device as it has control over the person’s number.
Scammers can thus bypass authentication hurdle and access OTPs from the bank.
With the advancement in technology, it is all the more important for people to be cautious of not entertaining call from ‘a person who sound suspicious to you’, the report said.
You should immediately contact the service provider in the event of your phone having locked or showing some error message such as ‘not valid’.
Availing SIM lock facility can help safeguard your valuable details including access to your bank and afterwards block your UPI and internet banking.
In the event of suspicious of a fraudulent transaction, you should immediately contact your bank.
Another important tips is to keep changing passwords at regular intervals.
