Srinagar: Petrol pumps across Kashmir witnessed heavy rush and panic buying on Thursday as rumours of a fuel shortage linked to the West Asia conflict spread, even as authorities assured that adequate supplies of essential commodities were available.

Long queues were seen at fuel stations in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley, with people arriving in vehicles as well as carrying cans and bottles to stock up on fuel. The surge in demand led to serpentine queues, with many people waiting for hours to fill their tanks.

Several fuel stations were forced to shut operations temporarily, turning away customers after running dry amid the sudden spike in demand.

“I had to wait over an hour due to the huge rush, but I eventually managed to get petrol,” said Srinagar resident Owais Ahmad. He added that widespread rumours about a possible fuel shortage and even a potential lockdown due to an “energy crisis” had fuelled panic among residents.

“Social media is full of such rumours, which has created anxiety among people. Whenever such panic arises, Kashmiris tend to rush to petrol pumps first,” he said.

A petrol pump owner in Ganderbal district said the panic was largely unnecessary, forcing several outlets to suspend operations. “There is no shortage of supply. However, due to the overwhelming rush, we had to close early. Some pumps and fuel agencies are limiting sales to maintain adequate stock,” he said.

Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to remain calm and avoid panic buying. Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg said sufficient quantities of LPG and petroleum products are available across the Valley and are being regularly replenished to ensure uninterrupted supply.

He appealed to residents not to be misled by rumours and warned of strict legal action against those spreading misinformation or inciting panic.

District administrations across the Valley also reviewed the situation and called on people to avoid unnecessary crowding at fuel stations to ensure smooth and equitable distribution.
