In an event that sparked significant local discussion, Pakistani Parliamentarian Abdul Rehman Kanju joined a Diwali celebration organized by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in Chautala village, Sirsa district, Haryana.

This gathering honored INLD’s recent resurgence in the state and celebrated the victory of two Chautala family members, Arjun Chautala and Aditya Devi Lal Chautala, who recently won their respective seats in the Haryana Assembly elections.

The event marked the party’s resurgence after INLD faced significant setbacks in the 2019 elections, retaining only one seat. However, the party saw a boost in 2024, with Arjun Chautala securing the Rania Assembly seat and Aditya Devi Lal Chautala winning Dabwali, each with around a 50,000-vote margin.

Locals, especially the youth, were abuzz over the unique presence of a Pakistani lawmaker in the festivities, which were well-documented on the party's social media.

Kanju, who was warmly received by the villagers, expressed gratitude for the hospitality and reminisced about his ancestral roots in Punjab. He shared his appreciation for the support he has received from the Chautala family through difficult times and praised the family's commitment to public welfare. Extending Diwali greetings to the community, he encouraged young attendees to respect their elders and follow their guidance.

The INLD’s official statement following the event highlighted the significance of Kanju’s presence as an international guest, which, they noted, added a special touch to the celebration. Historically, Chautala village has been home to a lineage of influential political figures, including five Members of Parliament, 14 MLAs, and a former Deputy Prime Minister, underscoring its legacy in Haryana's political landscape.
