Opposition raises concerns over delay in voter turnout data release by ECI

New Delhi: As the third phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 commenced on Tuesday, concerns have been raised by opposition parties regarding the delay in the release of voter turnout data for the first two phases by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a letter addressed to INDIA bloc parties, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge questioned whether the delay in releasing the data was indicative of an "attempt to doctor the final results." Kharge urged the INDIA bloc parties to collectively voice their concerns against such discrepancies to uphold the principles of democracy and the Constitution.
The delay in releasing the final voter turnout figures for the first two phases, which were released 11 days after the first phase and four days after the second phase, has raised questions about the credibility of the Election Commission. Kharge emphasized that the delay has undermined the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.
Kharge further highlighted discrepancies in the voter turnout data, noting significant increases between the conclusion of voting and the delayed release of data for both phases. He questioned the reasons behind these discrepancies and urged the Election Commission to provide clarifications regarding the delay and the sudden surge in voter turnout figures.
Communist Party Of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury also expressed concerns over the delay in the final figures for the percentage of votes cast and called for transparency and clarity from the Election Commission. Similarly, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) demanded constituency-wise precise voter turnout figures and explanations for the delay.
The delay in releasing accurate and timely voter turnout data has led to widespread apprehensions and has cast doubts on the functioning of the Election Commission. Opposition parties are calling for transparency and accountability to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
