Kolkata: Tension gripped the Singur area of West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Thursday after a trainee nurse was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a private nursing home.

The body of the deceased, identified as Deepali Jana from Nandigram in East Midnapore district, was discovered hanging from the ceiling of a room on the hospital’s third floor on Wednesday night. Staff members spotted her first and alerted the police, who recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Jana had joined the nursing home just three days earlier, having completed her General Nursing Midwifery diploma in Bengaluru last year.

“A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation has started. We are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the cause of death,” said a senior Hooghly district police officer.

Her family has alleged murder, claiming she could not have taken her own life, and lodged a complaint against the nursing home owner and management. The incident sparked protests by locals, with the victim’s parents staging a sit-in on the road demanding justice.

“I couldn't understand what happened. My daughter came for training. She is a healthy and good girl. I can't understand what happened. The police need to find out what happened to my daughter. She was murdered. We want the culprits to be punished,” her mother said.

The incident comes days after the state marked the first death anniversary of the RG Kar rape-murder victim.
