New Delhi: Nupur Sharma only spoke the truth, said Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders reacting to the ongoing controversy surrounding the suspended BJP spokesperson's alleged hate speech against Prophet Muhammad.

The Dutch Member of Parliament, known for his far-right views on Islam, has come out supporting Nupur Sharma while urging Indians to rally behind her.

Wilders told an Indian TV channel that Nupur Sharma has the right to speak out no matter whether people like or dislike what she said, and further he added that freedom of speech is most important for democracy.

Putting his foot down strongly, Wilders said nobody should apologise or be punished for speaking out the 'truth' .

As regards the economic pressure on India from Muslim world, he said a nation should not lose its freedom for economic reasons.

Wilders said he was getting death threats after supporting Nupur Sharma and also, he had earlier received fatwas from Al-Qaeda and Taliban for making movie called " Fitna" about the Quran.

Afterwards, he said, he has been living in protection and has never since walked the streets without security.

He said knew what Sharma would have to face because he had to leave his home and never went back.

Calling out Arab countries for being "hypocrites", he said they have the worst track record in terms of human rights.

Wilders who had earlier controversially campaigned for banning Islam in his country urged nation to stop being "tolerant to the intolerant".

Nupur Sharma was removed as spokesperson of BJP following widespread criticism over her comments on Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate.

The controversy roiled across the Muslim world with countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bahrain, Turkiye, as well as Iran condemning Nupur Sharma's remarks.

Qatar and Kuwait demanded a public apology from India.
