Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to rename the Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, in honour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public life.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision on Friday after the state Cabinet approved 39 proposals at a meeting.

Addressing a press conference, Adityanath said the Prime Minister’s 25-year public service had played a major role in the development of the country and Uttar Pradesh.

“It is a moment of immense pride for the UP Cabinet as it is from the land of UP (Varanasi) that PM Modi was elected as MP,” he said.

The Chief Minister said Modi shared a close association with Uttar Pradesh and that the state had witnessed rapid growth under his leadership.

He said the Prime Minister had dedicated himself to service, commitment and nation-building, and that India’s global position had become stronger during his tenure.

Adityanath referred to the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the return of the idol of Goddess Annapurna from abroad as key milestones associated with the Prime Minister’s leadership.

He also said Uttar Pradesh had seen major improvements in infrastructure since 2017, with the expansion of expressways, highways, Metro services and the Regional Rapid Transit System.

“The UP Cabinet is grateful to PM Modi for gifting Noida International Airport to the state, which is UP’s biggest airport and is going to become the country’s biggest aviation hub in the future,” the Chief Minister said.

“Therefore, the Cabinet has passed the resolution to rename the airport as Narendra Modi International Airport, Jewar, Noida,” he added.

The Jewar airport is expected to strengthen air connectivity and spur economic activity in the state. Prime Minister Modi had inaugurated its first phase in March.

The airport currently has an estimated annual passenger capacity of around 12 million. It is expected to become one of Asia’s largest airports after the completion of all four phases.

Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with leaders of allied parties, attended the Cabinet meeting.
