The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) would hold a two-day public hearing on alleged human rights violations in the five northeastern states on December 15 and 16. The Registrar of NHRC has asked the people of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur and Sikkim to file their complaint to the commission by November 20. The venue of the public hearing, however, is yet to be notified.

Following a complaint by Delhi-based lawyer Arif Jwadder, the NHRC has also sought Action Taken Reports from Assam's Director General of Police on alleged fake encounters in the state since May 2021. The DGP has been given time till four weeks to submit the reports. Jwaddar has alleged that the police have killed many accused persons since May in the name of encounters. Since early May, over 24 accused have been killed and 40 injured by the police. The police claim they opened fire as the accused tried to escape from custody or during operations.
