Barpeta: After a social media post by a theatre group drew attention to the situation, netizens came together to supply sweaters to over 200 poor students in Assam. The initiative started when a teacher started exploring ways for her students to be warm.

Anupama Das spoke to her family about how most of her students are from financially backward families and cannot afford sweaters. These children are forced to attend classes in the winter in nothing but the cotton uniform provided by the government. Assam's Barpeta district sees temperature dropping to 11-15°C.

As word got out, a theatre group called Samahar Natya Gosthee took up the matter. General secretary of the theatre group, Sitanath Lahkar said they have limited resources and decided to talk about the problem on social media. The post received an overwhelming response and within five days, the group could collect enough funds to get sweaters for the students in the entire lower primary section.
