The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA is set to retain power in Assam for a third consecutive term as the alliance secured a decisive majority in the 126-member Assembly, according to the latest results released by the Election Commission.

The BJP emerged as the dominant force in the election, winning 81 seats and leading in one more constituency. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BOPF) also won 10 constituencies.

The Congress managed to win 19 seats, while other parties, including the AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and the Trinamool Congress, opened their accounts.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma registered a massive victory from Jalukbari, winning by a margin of more than 89,434 votes. Sarma, who has represented the constituency since 2001, defeated Congress candidate Bidisha Neog and Independent candidate Dipika Das.

Assam recorded an estimated voter turnout of 85.64 per cent, one of the highest in the state’s electoral history. Describing the participation as historic, Sarma said the high turnout reflected the “hope and confidence” of the people.

One of the biggest upsets of the election came in Jorhat, where Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami. Gogoi was making his Assembly election debut, while Goswami, a five-time MLA, returned to the Assembly after contesting as a BJP candidate.

Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi retained his political relevance by defeating BJP candidate Kushal Dowari in the Sibsagar constituency.

In Bihpuria, BJP leader Bhupen Kumar Borah defeated Congress candidate Narayan Bhuyan. Borah had joined the BJP ahead of the elections after quitting the Congress, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning in Assam.

The BJP also secured a significant victory in Dispur, where Pradyut Bordolai won after resigning from the Congress and joining the BJP before the polls. Bordolai defeated Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami and Independent candidate Jayanta Kumar Das.

According to Election Commission trends late on Monday evening, the BJP-led NDA had comfortably crossed the majority mark, reinforcing the party’s dominance in Assam politics and positioning Himanta Biswa Sarma for another term as Chief Minister.
