Narcotics worth over Rs 11,311 crore were seized at the country’s seaports between 2020 and 2024, with most cases reported from Gujarat ports, including Adani’s Mundra and Pipavav, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, in a written reply to a question from Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, said that eight seizures were recorded in Gujarat, including three at Adani Port, Mundra and one at Pipavav Port, and that another eight were in Maharashtra, primarily at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai. He said that two cases were reported from Kolkata and one from Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

Rai said that the seizures “are the result of the effective measures taken in controlling drug trafficking and highlight the successful coordination between the State and Central law enforcement agencies,” and he added that they demonstrate the impact of enforcement rather than an increase in trafficking attempts.

The minister said that measures being taken include a “constant vigil” by the Narcotics Control Bureau, Navy and Coast Guard, and he added that the government has established state-level Anti-Narcotics Task Forces. He said that a Joint Coordination Committee “headed by the Director General of NCB” is also functioning to strengthen the efforts against drug trafficking.
