New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the United States President Joe Biden on Monday, briefing his recent visit to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The two also discussed the Bangladesh situation and emphasized an early restoration of normalcy as well as the safety of Hindus there, The Indian Express reported.

According to TIE, Modi raised the question of the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh at least three times since August 8, when Muhammad Yunus took charge as chief advisor to the interim government. However, it was the first time India had discussed it with the US at the highest level.

Soon after Yunus was sworn in, Modi had raised the issue of the safety of Hindus. He then mentioned the same during his speech on India’s Independence Day at the Red Fort as well as during his phone conversation with Yunus later.

On his Monday phone call with Biden, Modi wrote on X, “Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on the phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India’s full support for the early return of peace and stability.”

“We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed the need for early restoration of normalcy and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh,” he posted.

The PM’s office also said in a post that Modi reiterated India’s consistent position in Ukraine. He said that India is in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and fully backs an early return of peace and stability in the region.
