Manmohan Singh an inspiring example: PM Modi praises former PM
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called former PM Manmohan Singh an ‘inspiration’ for lawmakers, NDTV reported.
PM Modi cited the example of Singh arriving at the parliament in a wheelchair a few months earlier to vote on a key bill, adding that the former PM was ‘only strengthening this democracy.
‘I remember during the voting in the House, it was known that the treasury bench would win but Dr Manmohan Singh came on his wheelchair and cast his vote. This an example of a member being alert of his duties. He was an inspirational example,’ he was quoted as saying.
PM Modi was speaking at the farewell event to the retiring members, when he recalled Dr Manmohan Singh’s ‘inspirational example.’
Manmohan Singh's appearance at the parliament in wheelchair that day, according to PM Modi, was not about who he was supporting in the voting.
It was in August the former Prime Minister arrived in the parliament in the wheelchair to participate in the discussion on a key bill.
‘Ideological differences are short lived, but the way Manmohan Singh has guided this House and the country for such a long period, he will be remembered for his contributions during every discussion on our democracy,’ PM Modi reportedly said.
Alongside appreciating Singh’s commitment, PM Modi said: ‘I pray that he lives long and keep guiding us.’
Thanking PM Modi for his words about Singh, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said: ‘Manmohan Singh did good work. I thank the PM for his words. This is how things should be. Appreciate good work and criticise the bad.’
