Karnataka: A lecturer at Manipal University of Technology (MIT) referred to a student by a terrorist's name. The student called out the problematic behaviour and said it is not funny. The 45-second video of the incident has gone viral on social media for addressing the casual Islamophobia in society.

The college has started an investigation and the lecturer will not be taking classes till the enquiry is over.

In the video, the student said "6/11 was not funny. Being a Muslim in this country and facing all this every day is not funny. You can't joke about my religion, that too in such a derogatory manner."

The teacher responded to the student in an attempt to placate him saying that he is like a son to him. The student asked him whether the teacher will ever call his own son a "terrorist". The lecturer answered with a "no" and went on to apologise.

The student further said: "Then how can you call me like that in front of so many people? You are a professional, you are teaching." When the lecturer continued to apologise, the student said sorry does not change the way he thinks or how he portrays himself in the classroom.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education told The News Minute that the institution condemned the behaviour of the lecturer. A screenshot of the alleged statement from the student is being circulated online. The student said the lecturer called him Kasab as a joke and it was unacceptable. He added that he has spoken to the lecturer and found his apology to be genuine. He also stated that the behaviour can be ignored this time because of his apology.
