New Delhi: Late on Friday, the police arrested Shankar Mishra, the man who allegedly urinated on an elderly woman aboard an Air India flight. Delhi Police arrested the man from Bengaluru and brought him to the national capital before he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days, NDTV reported.

The court observed that there was no need for police custody for further investigation.

Earlier, the man was on the run, and police had released a lookout notice or airport alert to trace him.

The fresh development comes after Mishra released a statement claiming that he had paid the affected person compensation, which she accepted, and the matter reached a settlement. He had released the statement through his lawyer.

Mishra, who had switched off his mobile phone in an attempt to stay off the grid, communicated with his friends through his social media handles. He also at least once used his credit or debit cards. These helped the police zero in on his location, which was Bengaluru.

On November 26, an inebriated Mishra allegedly unzipped his pants and urinated on an elderly woman in the flight’s business class.

The elderly woman’s complaint, based on which the FIR was lodged, said that she had told the flight crew that she did not want to see the man’s face, but the offender was brought before her, who started apologizing and crying. The complainant accused the crew of being unprofessional and added that they were passive in managing the situation.

Regarding Mishra’s statement that the matter was settled and compensation was given, his lawyers added that in addition to the compensation of Rs 15,000, he got the woman’s belongings cleaned. But it is learned that the woman’s daughter returned the money a month later, saying that they could not accept it.

Mishra’s employer, Wells Fargo, released a statement on Friday saying that it terminated him from service. He was the vice president of the India chapter of the MNC headquartered in California.
