New Delhi: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from July 20 to August 13, 2026.

In a post on X, he said that Droupadi Murmu had approved the government's recommendation to convene both Houses of Parliament for the session, which will focus on debates, discussions and decisions on issues of national importance, The New Indian Express reported.

The 25-day session, comprising 19 sittings, comes after the BJP's victories in the Assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. The political fallout from the rebellions in the All India Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) is also expected to feature during the session.

According to the report, a decision by Om Birla on requests by 20 TMC MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups is still pending.

It was further reported that the ruling NDA's strength in the Rajya Sabha has increased after newly elected and re-elected MPs took the oath. It added that the resignation of three rebel TMC MPs and the upcoming bypolls could further strengthen the BJP's position in the Upper House.

Meanwhile, ANI, citing sources, reported that the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the controversial 130th Constitution Amendment Bill is expected to adopt its report on July 17. The report is likely to retain the contentious provision that mandates the automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union or State ministers from office if they are arrested and remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days in cases involving serious offences.

Sources told ANI that while the committee is unlikely to recommend dropping the provision despite objections raised by stakeholders, it is expected to propose safeguards to prevent its misuse for political vendetta or motivated prosecutions.

The proposed amendment has triggered political debate, with supporters arguing that it would improve accountability in public office, while Opposition parties have claimed it could be used to destabilise elected governments through politically motivated investigations and arrests.

The committee is expected to finalise and adopt its report on July 17 before submitting it to Parliament for further consideration.

The Opposition is also expected to raise the issue of privilege proceedings against Defence Minister Rajnath Singh after the Congress alleged that he had misled Parliament regarding casualties suffered by Indian soldiers during Operation Sindoor.
