JNU sexual harassment: FIR filed against Cong MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following sexual harassment allegations reported by female students.
The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, October 11, based on a complaint filed by JNU's Chief Security Officer. Police said the case was registered under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation is underway.
Media reports said 11 female students had submitted complaints against Akoijam in May, alleging that he invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings and gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also accused him of making obscene and inappropriate remarks in classrooms. The allegations were examined during an internal inquiry that preceded the university's decision to dismiss him.
The case triggered a political controversy on Sunday, with the BJP questioning the Congress leadership's silence on the allegations. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj asked Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders to respond, arguing that their stated commitment to women's rights should be matched by accountability.
The allegations remain under police investigation.
