J&K police attaches HQ of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, outfit founded by Geelani
text_fieldsPolice in Jammu and Kashmir have sealed the headquarters of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, the separatist outfit established by Syed Ali Shah Geelani in 2004.
Officials said the action was carried out under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) based on an FIR filed at the Budgam police station last year. According to a police statement, the three-storey building at Rehmatabad, Hyderpora, which served as the group’s head office, has been formally attached under Section 25 of the law.
Tehreek-e-Hurriyat was formed by Geelani after his split from the Jamaat-e-Islami. The organisation was banned by the Centre in 2023, the Indian Express reported.
The headquarters of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat was located within Geelani’s residence at Rehmatabad in Srinagar’s Hyderpora. Following the deaths of Geelani and the group’s chief Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai—who passed away in a Jammu jail in 2022—and its subsequent ban in 2023, the outfit had become largely inactive.
Most of its senior and mid-level leaders are currently imprisoned. Geelani, a former legislator, had himself remained under house arrest for over a decade until his death at the age of 92.
Police explained that the attachment of the property was carried out on the basis of gathered evidence and with approval from the competent authority, in accordance with legal provisions.
They described the move as an important step in their ongoing probe into unlawful and subversive activities, and as part of efforts to counter threats to national security and preserve peace in the region.
Officials also emphasised that law enforcement would continue to act firmly against individuals and organisations involved in activities harmful to the country’s sovereignty and integrity.
