India's three new criminal laws set to come into effect on July 1

New Delhi: The Centre stated on Saturday that three new criminal laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act — aimed at fundamentally overhauling the country's criminal justice system will go into effect July 1.
Parliament passed new laws to replace the IPC, the CrPC, and the Indian Evidence Act during the Winter Session. President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval to the laws on December 25.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 1 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (46 of 2023), the Central Government hereby appoints the 1st day of July 2024 as the date on which the provisions of the said Sanhita, except the provisions of the entry relating to section 106(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in the First Schedule, shall come into force,” the government notification read, Indian Express reported.
In December 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the passing of three criminal justice laws that will repeal as many colonial-era acts as a watershed event in Indian history, claiming that it represented the start of a new era with laws centred on public service and welfare.
